In her oil paintings, Soraya Dagman works with light, shadows, and textures by depicting drapery, which she integrates into scenes that oscillate between surrealism and hyperrealism. By placing the importance on the drawing process and particularly on the observations of her models, her compositions gain a deep attachment to a certain reality. This means that preparing the canvas is an essential step for Soraya, from the initial sketches to the drawing that allows her to anticipate the placement of shadows and light, and sometimes even the composition of real-life scenes that she photographs to use as references.
But beyond this technical aspect, the dreamlike quality of the colors she uses, particularly violet, serves as a means for her to capture the poetic essence of everyday banality and make it perceptible through painting. The same goes for the sometimes unusual combinations of objects she paints or the languid postures of her models, which always transport us into a world imbued with mystery.
By combining a realistic technique with surreal elements, Soraya plays with bringing out the mystical from the real or the absurd from the ordinary.
