Roland Schauls — Weitere Launen

Artist Roland Schauls, who lives and works between Luxembourg and Stuttgart, is internationally known for his large-scale project “Portrait Society”, in which he reinterpreted 504 portraits by Old Masters. Portraiture remains central to his practice, ranging from individual to group compositions that intentionally leave space for multiple interpretations. Rather than illustrating fixed narratives, Schauls invites viewers to create their own stories often hinted at through subtly ironic titles.

Stylistically, his works recall early 20th-century avant-garde painting while integrating unmistakably contemporary elements such as modern clothing, objects, and spatial constructions. His playful shifts between clear lines and loose brushwork, as well as his use of acrylic and charcoal on canvas, create dynamic tensions within the image.

With their vivid colours, layered references, and unexpected spatiality, Schauls' paintings open up new moods the very spirit captured in “Weitere Launen.”
